Is it helpful to have both PMP and Primavera P6?

You must know one of these Project Planning tools – Primavera P6 or MS Project 2016 – to be able to manage projects with confidence. If you are planning to wear Project Manager’s hat in future, then you should preferably have PMP Certification under your belt to have all-round PM knowledge and skills that a Project Manager needs to steer projects out of trouble and steadfastly monitor project right till successful closure.
Lets try and map some of the Project Manager skills with the courses:

  1. Project Manager should be able to lay a sound foundation of the Project (PMI-PBA and PMP training)
  2. Project Manager decides project gates (PMP Training)
  3. Project Manager Scopes out the Project (PMP Training)
  4. Project Manager and his team break Project into Manageable Parts keeping resource availability, Organizational competency and Procurement in mind (PMP)
  5. Project Manager himself creates a good Project Schedule or depends on the project planner to do so. Even if Project Planner creates the schedule, the project manager should be able to understand and read it well, otherwise he will be taken for a ride and project would easily go over-budget due to some specific reasons which can’t be explained detail here (Primavera P6 / MS Project)
  6. Project Manager decides to contract out work packages (PMP)
  7. Project Manager and team create a Communication Plan especially if it’s big project and Resource Plan to plan resource skill sets and other things in advance (PMP)
  8. Finally Project Manager initiates Risk Management to pro-actively deal with project risks (PMP / PMI-RMP)
  9. etc
