Prince2 FAQs

PRINCE2 means Projects IN Controlled Environments. Along with PMP, Prince2 is one of the widely used Project Management Methodologies.

FLEXIBILITY. By far one of the biggest advantages of using PRINCE2 is its flexibility. As a generic methodology, PRINCE2 can be applied to any project regardless of its size, scale, location, industry or sector.

Prince can be easily combined with Scrum or Kanban to manage a multi-phase project. PMP in it’s present form isn’t that flexible.

We will present a very brief answer and then leave the judgment to you:

Parameter 1: Geography

The PMP® certification is preferred in the USA, Canada, Middle East, Australia, and India.

PRINCE2®, however, is recognized well in the UK, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

Parameter 2: Exam Toughness

PMP is difficult to clear without adequate preparation. After your PMP training, 60 to 80 hours of self-study is required. A thorough review of all knowledge areas should be done before appearing for the exam. Generally, people pass in 1st or sometimes in 2nd attempt. The benefit is, it is one exam of 4 hours and not 2 exams like Prince2, so you can crack the exam in one go. PMP preparation although tedious and a bit long, is very rewarding with respect to the development of your knowledge base and logical reasoning capabilities.

Prince2 Foundation is very easy to clear but Prince2 Practitioner presents the challenge and requires some self-study before you get in a position to write the exam.

Students are advised not to take Prince2 Foundation and Prince2 Practitioner in a single week. It takes time to understand concepts and their application in project situations. So, please don’t rush. You might just pass the exam, without developing any depth in the subject.

Ideally, Prince2 Foundation can be taken within 1 week of training completion, and Prince2 Practitioner with at least 2 more weeks of preparation!

Parameter 3: Flexibility

Prince 2 is very flexible and jells well with other methodologies.

Parameter 4: Knowledge and Skills Development

Generally speaking, Prince 2 and PMP are at par here.

Parameter 5: Project Monitoring

For Project Management governance and complete Project oversight and decision-making, Prince2 is excellent. PMP is more useful for knowledge area monitoring.

Conclusion

Prince2 and PMP do not substitute each other. In fact, they complement each other. It would help if you do both. You can easily reconcile conflicting terms – for example, Project Management Plan in PMP is similar to Project Initiation Document (PID) in Prince2.

So if you do Prince2 and/or PMP and one of the PM tools (Primavera P6 or MS Project), you will become a complete project manager.
