PMP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A PMP Certification Makes Your Resume More Attractive. If you’re looking for a job as a project manager—or are still early on in your project management career—a PMP certification is a great credential to add to your resume because often recruiters use certification to narrow their candidate pool.

Without PMP Certification you only have the option to grow while staying with your current organization. You will miss out on a lot of opportunities that you could have easily capitalized on with PMP under your belt.

Yes it is worth it if you are looking for a career in Project Management. PMP is a globally recognized credential and valued across the globe. It is the only recognized project management certification in the Middle East. If the course is taken from the right institute, the training will have a palpable effect on your knowledge and vocabulary. You will feel confident appearing in interviews. A PMP Certification holder can answer all the questions that are asked in the project management interviews, whether he has worked on enough projects or not – the knowledge gained from PMP Training covers all gaps and grey areas.

Whatever time and money you invest in passing PMP, you will recoup it all within shortest possible time.

When your PMP application gets successful, you are given a one-year period to pass your exam. During this period, you can take up to three attempts.

Each PMP certification cycle lasts for three years during which you will need to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) to renew your certification at the end of the cycle. Once you have successfully completed a single cycle, another new three year cycle begins.

Project Management Institute charges following fees:

  • PMP Exam Testing Fee for Non-PMI Members: $555 (USD)

OR

  • PMP Exam Testing Fee for PMI Members: $405 (USD)
  • PMI Annual Membership: $139 (USD)

35 hours Project Management training is mandatory eligibility requirement for taking the exam. So, you must factor in training cost also.

PMI allows PMP® aspirants to take up to 3 PMP® Exams in the one-year eligibility period, and each exam retake (PMP® re-examination or re-exam) costs an additional PMP® Exam fee of US$275 (for PMI members) / US$375 (for non-members).

You must know one of these Project Planning tools – Primavera P6 or MS Project 2016 – to be able to manage projects with confidence. If you are planning to wear a Project Manager’s hat in the future, then you should preferably have PMP Certification under your belt to have all-around PM knowledge and skills that a Project Manager needs to steer projects out of trouble and steadfastly monitor project right till successful closure.
Let’s try and map some of the Project Manager skills with the courses:

  1. The Project Manager should be able to lay a sound foundation for the Project (PMI-PBA and PMP training)
  2. The Project Manager decides project gates (PMP Training)
  3. The Project Manager Scopes out the Project (PMP Training)
  4. The Project manager and his team break the Project into Manageable Parts keeping resource availability, Organizational competency, and Procurement in mind (PMP)
  5. The project manager himself creates a good Project Schedule or depends on the project planner to do so. Even if the Project Planner creates the schedule, the project manager should be able to understand and read it well, otherwise, he will be taken for a ride and the project would easily go over-budget due to some specific reasons which can’t be explained in detail here (Primavera P6 / MS Project)
  6. The Project Manager decides to contract out work packages (PMP)
  7. The Project Manager and team create a Communication Plan especially if it’s a big project and Resource Plan to plan resource skill sets and other things in advance (PMP)
  8. Finally, the Project Manager initiates Risk Management to pro-actively deal with project risks (PMP / PMI-RMP)
  9. etc

The answer is “yes” if you work on projects. You must go ahead with your PMP training followed by certification.

We have come across people who lost their jobs and were in a dilemma whether to go for PMP training or wait until they get a job. Getting a job takes time and is never easy without the PMP certification as consultants are using PMP as a criteria for screening resumes for setting up job interviews. So there are 2 kinds of mindsets we have come across: One, that I will preserve whatever savings I have and wait to get a job first; and the second mindset, that I will bite the bullet and do it.

There is never a perfect situation. When people are busy with projects and work, they don’t have time for PMP Training. When people don’t have a job, they have anxiety and the fear of unknown, and with savings taking a hit, they tread carefully. Even in challenging situations, if a candidate can muster courage and go ahead with PMP, it pays off more often then not. We have seen candidates walking into our classroom without jobs, and then devoting time and efforts in learning project management, passing the exam, and getting the job soon after. Some candidates have got jobs within a month of getting certified.

Therefore, if your situation permits you, then go ahead and do it. You will be rewarded soon after for taking this risk.
