PMP Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
A PMP Certification Makes Your Resume More Attractive. If you’re looking for a job as a project manager—or are still early on in your project management career—a PMP certification is a great credential to add to your resume… because often recruiters use certification to narrow their candidate pool.
Certification in project management helps validate your ability to lead business projects, and it can earn you the respect of peers and employers.
When your PMP application gets successful, you are given a one-year period to pass your exam. During this period, you can take up to three attempts.
Each PMP certification cycle lasts for three years during which you will need to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) to renew your certification at the end of the cycle. Once you have successfully completed a single cycle, another new three year cycle begins.
Project Management Institute charges following fees:
- PMP Exam Testing Fee for Non-PMI Members: $555 (USD)
OR
- PMP Exam Testing Fee for PMI Members: $405 (USD)
- PMI Annual Membership: $139 (USD)
35 hours Project Management training is mandatory eligibility requirement for taking the exam. So, you must factor in training cost also.
PMI allows PMP® aspirants to take up to 3 PMP® Exams in the one-year eligibility period, and each exam retake (PMP® re-examination or re-exam) costs an additional PMP® Exam fee of US$275 (for PMI members) / US$375 (for non-members).

You must know one of these Project Planning tools – Primavera P6 or MS Project 2016 – to be able to manage projects with confidence. If you are planning to wear Project Manager’s hat in future, then you should preferably have PMP Certification under your belt to have all-round PM knowledge and skills that a Project Manager needs to steer projects out of trouble and steadfastly monitor project right till successful closure.
Lets try and map some of the Project Manager skills with the courses:
- Project Manager should be able to lay a sound foundation of the Project (PMI-PBA and PMP training)
- Project Manager decides project gates (PMP Training)
- Project Manager Scopes out the Project (PMP Training)
- Project Manager and his team break Project into Manageable Parts keeping resource availability, Organizational competency and Procurement in mind (PMP)
- Project Manager himself creates a good Project Schedule or depends on the project planner to do so. Even if Project Planner creates the schedule, the project manager should be able to understand and read it well, otherwise he will be taken for a ride and project would easily go over-budget due to some specific reasons which can’t be explained detail here (Primavera P6 / MS Project)
- Project Manager decides to contract out work packages (PMP)
- Project Manager and team create a Communication Plan especially if it’s big project and Resource Plan to plan resource skill sets and other things in advance (PMP)
- Finally Project Manager initiates Risk Management to pro-actively deal with project risks (PMP / PMI-RMP)
- etc
